50-5-5

VISUAL ART/PAPER FOLDING

This project delves into the unique interplay between paper as a medium and human perception, employing the guiding design principle of 50-5-5 to create an immersive exhibition experience. The objective is to harness the dynamic relationship between the viewer and the visual composition, using artificial intelligence, specifically a series of research outputs and eventually an origami simulator, to generate intricate paper forms. Each side of these forms is deliberately designed to create optical illusions, offering varied perspectives and hidden elements depending on the viewer's proximity and angle of observation.

The exhibition concept is intricately tied to the design principle of 50-5-5, which posits that a viewer's experience evolves as they approach a visual composition. At 50 feet, spectators will perceive seemingly "flat" figures. The square, circle, and triangle serve as the fundamental shapes for my installation, drawing inspiration from the works of Russian artists such as Lyubov Popova and Kasimir Malevich. These artists utilized geometric shapes and forms to symbolize the revolutionary spirit that permeated Russian society in the early 20th century. I aimed to create a visually striking installation using volumetric geometric shapes that not only pays homage to their revolutionary ideas but also seeks to influence the viewer's visual perception of the object. Just as Popova and Malevich utilized geometric shapes to convey deeper meanings and provoke thought, I sought to evoke a similar response from viewers through my use of AI, handcraft, and geometry in the installation.
As viewers enter the darkened exhibition space through an entrance designed to control and direct their gaze, the initial perception will be of three-dimensional forms. At 5 feet, the viewer discovers dimension, at 5 inches, texture and details are revealed.
Upon reaching a proximity of 5 inches to each surface, viewers will unlock the intricacies of the patterns resulting from the paper folding. Textures are crafted in accordance with the shape in which they are applied. For instance, for a cube, textures consist of squares in their composition; the triangle utilizes pyramids and triangular forms; and for a cylinder, circles form the basis of the texture design. This approach ensures that the textures harmonize seamlessly with the geometric forms, enhancing the overall aesthetic coherence and visual appeal of the design. The artificial intelligence-driven origami simulator ensures that each figure offers a unique visual experience, revealing hidden messages and details that only become apparent at this intimate distance. The viewer becomes an active participant, discovering the nuanced intricacies of the artwork through direct engagement.
